Generally iPhone has locked status, meaning – it is tied with local telecom provider. So, when you buy iphone you also have to purchase specific voice – data plan from telecom provider as specified by Apple.
Well, NOT anymore and no attempts required to unlock iPhone. Apple Store HongKong is officially (read legally) selling ‘unlocked’ iPhones with pricetag of HK$ 5,400 and HK$ 6,200 for 8GB and 16GB versions respectively.
Here is the fine print as shown on the homepage: “… iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.”
Yeah, just buy an iphone, pop-in your current SIM card and you are all set for iPhone experience. Apple can for sure consider spreading ‘unlock’ option in other regions as well, what say?
